About the Awards

The Big Wildlife Garden competition has been created to recognise the importance of individuals’ action for nature, and the benefits it brings to people.

The competition is being launched in August 2011, alongside the new England Biodiversity Strategy. This stems from a commitment in the Natural Environment White Paper for England, published in June 2011, to ‘protect and improve the natural environment’ and to ‘reconnect people with nature’. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is funding the competition, and have appointed The Wildlife Trusts and the Royal Horticultural Society to run it.

In July 2011, The Wildlife Trusts and the Royal Horticultural Society joined together to take over the Big Wildlife Garden website , previously run by the Government’s conservation adviser, Natural England.

Everyone can participate in wildlife-friendly gardening and this competition. We have categories for households, businesses, communities, schools, nurseries – both urban and non-urban.
