Entering your Garden
We encourage you to start thinking about your entry now, but the deadline is not until midnight British time on Sunday 20 May 2012. This gives you plenty of time to prepare by getting wildlife-friendly features into your garden, whatever time of year. You can see some of our top wildlife gardening tips here.
Start by registering on the Big Wildlife Garden website. By doing this you will be joining a community of gardeners throughout the country, and you will be able to see how many other Big Wildlife Gardeners there are in your locality.
Joining will also mean you have your own ‘My Garden’ page where you can store and upload information about your garden and where you will find a link to the competition form.
You can start filling out your form anytime, and you can save your entry before it is complete, so you can come back to it later. You don’t have to complete it all at once. You will find the saved form on your My Garden page.
There are four steps:
- Choose which competition category you want to enter.
- Small residential garden
- Large residential garden
- New residential garden
- Educational garden
- Community garden
- Business garden
- Tell us a little bit about:
- Your garden: What do you like best about your wildlife garden? What makes it good for wildlife? What inspires you about it? What do you think is your greatest wildlife gardening achievement in it? For example it might be a feature you made or a planting combination. (200 words maximum)
- Your favourite wildlife moment in your garden. This could be about any creature whether tiny insect or a larger bird or mammal. (100 words maximum)
- Upload at least two but no more than six images of your garden. They should show why it is a good wildlife garden. You can focus on particular features if you like. It would be great to have at least one image which shows a general view of the garden. This is a real chance to show how you have made a difference for wildlife in your garden, whether in just one area or all through the garden. You can also show wildlife interacting with those features. Maximum size per image is 5MB.
- You can improve your chances by letting us know via the wildlife wonders section in My Garden how many wildlife-friendly features you have in your garden. Just click on the ones you already have in your garden, and if you have time you can also plan other features into your garden, before the closing date, and add these two.
Remember, you can start your entry any time and save it to come back to later. Don’t feel that you have to wait until near the competition deadline of Sunday 20 May 2012 to submit your entry.
Good wildlife gardening features are needed by wildlife throughout the year, so if you can show or talk about what you do for wildlife in autumn, winter or spring, that is just as important as summertime features. There are many good examples of these ‘wildlife wonders’ on Big Wildlife Garden, so start exploring!
We look forward to hearing from you – good luck!
